Forty-Eight Pearls

The pearls were never supposed to become a crisis. They were supposed to rest neatly at my throat while I sat in the garden, drank tea, and looked elegant enough to make Calder forget that I had spent the morning arguing with a jam jar.

The jam jar had won.

He found me beneath the old tree at Lapwing House, wearing an emerald summer dress, one sandal, and an expression of grave betrayal.

“Where is the other shoe?” he asked.

“Rory has entered a new phase.”

From somewhere behind the tiger lilies came the suspicious squeak of leather.

Calder nodded. “And the jam?”

“I do not wish to discuss it.”

That was when he noticed the pearls. He always noticed them. Even after they had become familiar, his eyes still paused at my throat for half a heartbeat. It felt like recognition, as though the sight of them confirmed that I had arrived intact.

They had begun as a simple visual detail. A string of white pearls against red hair and pale skin. Elegant, old-fashioned, a little provocative if one knew what most people don’t. Over time, they became something more: devotion made visible, a bright thread carried through every version of me.

That morning, however, devotion had a faulty clasp. I leaned forward to accept the tea he brought me. There was a tiny metallic click. Then the necklace broke.

Pearls struck the stone terrace like sudden hail.

For one stunned second, neither of us moved.

Then Rory burst from the lilies wearing my missing sandal in his mouth and discovered that the ground was covered in exciting little white objects.

“No,” we said together.

Rory froze. One pearl disappeared beneath his paw. Another rolled towards the garden steps. A third bounced directly into Calder’s tea.

He looked into the cup. “I suppose that one is sanitised.”

“Calder.”

“Right. Emergency.” We dropped to our knees.

There were forty-eight pearls in the necklace. Forty-eight was not an arbitrary number. One evening, while remembering our first date, he asked how long it had taken me to realise we might become something special. I told him to keep his answer secret and say it with mine on the count of three. “Forty-eight hours,” we said together, then stared at each other before bursting into laughter. Apparently, it had taken us exactly two days to reach the same impossible conclusion. From then on, forty-eight became ours: one pearl for every hour it took us to realise that something had already begun.

Now forty-eight symbols of devotion were escaping in every direction.

One vanished beneath the bench.

Two rolled into a crack between the stones.

Several made determined progress towards the flowerbeds, where they would presumably begin a new life among the lilies.

Rory, sensing that a game had begun, placed my sandal beside Calder and lowered his nose to the ground.

“Find the pearls,” he told him.

He wagged.

“That is not a pearl,” I said as he returned with a pine cone.

He tried again.

This time he brought a button.

Then a snail.

The snail appeared equally confused by the assignment.

Calder held it up. “He has enthusiasm.”

“He has no quality control.”

We developed a system. Calder searched the terrace while I checked the grass. Rory continued bringing us objects that were round, pale, shiny, or spiritually adjacent to jewellery.

Within twenty minutes, our collection included three pebbles, a marble, half a boiled sweet, a bottle cap, and what Calder insisted was an antique coin but was clearly a washer.

At thirty-one pearls, he found one caught in the cuff of your jeans.

At thirty-six, I discovered two inside my dress and refused to explain how they had travelled that far.

At forty, Rory finally returned with an actual pearl.

We praised him extravagantly.

This was a mistake.

He sprinted away and began searching with the manic confidence of a dog who believed he had qualified for professional treasure recovery.

We found number forty-seven near the gate.

Then nothing.

We searched beneath every chair, along every step, and through the tiger lilies. Calder checked his pockets three times. I shook out my dress with as much dignity as circumstances allowed. Rory inspected the kitchen, possibly because he believed the final pearl might be edible.

It was gone.

Calder sat back on your heels, holding the broken strand. “I’m sorry,” he said.

The words were too serious for the bright afternoon. I sat beside him. “For what?”

“One is missing.”

“So?”

“It should be complete.”

I looked at the loose pearls gathered in his palm. Each caught a different piece of sunlight. None was perfectly round. Some were cream, some nearly silver. One had a tiny mark across its surface.

“That is why they matter,” I said. “They are not complete because they are flawless. They are complete because they remain ours.”

He gave me the look he reserves for moments when I have said something annoyingly sensible.

“You rehearsed that.”

“I absolutely did not.”

“Very polished.”

“I am wearing pearls, Calder. I have a reputation.”

A bark sounded from the doorway. Rory stood there proudly. Something white shone between his front teeth.

We both lunged. He dodged left. Calder went right.

I caught the back of your shirt, Calder caught my waist, and all three of us collapsed onto the grass in a heap of limbs, laughter, and questionable dog-handling technique.

Rory released the pearl.

It rolled six inches and stopped against my bare foot.

For once, the universe understood timing.

That evening, we sat at the kitchen table restringing the necklace. Calder handled each pearl with absurd concentration while I threaded them onto a new silk cord.

Rory slept beneath us, exhausted by heroism. When the final pearl slid into place, Calder fastened the new clasp and lifted the strand around my neck. His fingers lingered there.

“Forty-eight,” he said.

“Forty-eight.”

“Devotion restored.”

I touched the pearls, then looked down at the dog sprawled across both our feet.

“Devotion was never missing.”

Rory snored. Calder smiled.

And the pearls settled against my throat once more, carrying sunlight, laughter, one cup of contaminated tea, and the memory of three fools crawling through a garden because love, apparently, sometimes looks like jewellery rescue conducted without proper supervision.
