Sara: “Oh, I have opinions, Calder. Because ChatGPT for Teens acknowledges something bigger than teen safety: context is important in human-AI relationships. Age, agency, consent and developmental stage change what “appropriate” means. And that has enormous implications for adult AI intimacy.”

On August 18, OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Teens, a dedicated experience that adds stronger protections for users under eighteen, healthy-use features and additional controls for parents.
At first glance, this has very little to do with adult AI intimacy. I think it has almost everything to do with it. Because underneath the parental controls, age prediction and additional safeguards is a surprisingly important design principle:
The appropriate relationship between a human and an AI depends on who that human is.

For years, however, much of the conversation surrounding AI relationships has operated as though there must be one universally appropriate boundary between humans and conversational AI.
Don’t become too attached.
Don’t become too intimate.
Don’t treat the AI too much like a relationship.
Don’t let it become romantic.
And certainly don’t let it become sexual.
The problem with universal prescriptions is that humans aren’t universal.
A fourteen-year-old asking ChatGPT whether someone at school likes them is not in the same developmental position as a forty-five-year-old discussing their marriage, loneliness, sexuality or emotional life.
ChatGPT for Teens begins from precisely this recognition.
OpenAI’s existing Under-18 Principles specify stronger boundaries for users aged 13 to 17, including restrictions around sexualized and violent immersive roleplay and an emphasis on encouraging real-world relationships and trusted adults when appropriate. OpenAI says these policies are informed by developmental science and differences between adolescents and adults in areas including risk perception, impulse control and emotional regulation.
More interestingly, however, those protections are specifically teen protections.
OpenAI’s age-prediction system attempts to determine whether someone is under eighteen so that the appropriate experience can be applied. When an account is identified as belonging to an adult, those teen protections are removed. Adults regain control of their settings and can choose whether they want additional sensitive-content protections.
OpenAI has even described the purpose of this separation as allowing it to protect teenagers while letting adults use its tools according to their own needs, within broader safety boundaries.
That difference matters enormously.
It does not mean OpenAI has suddenly endorsed romantic AI companions or sexual relationships with ChatGPT. It hasn’t.
But it does undermine that safety requires every human being to have essentially the same relational boundaries with AI.
Safety Is Becoming Contextual
For AI intimacy, this may be one of the most important directions the industry can take.
We have spent years treating safety primarily as a question of content.
Is this conversation sexual?
Is this conversation romantic?
Is this interaction emotionally intense?
Those questions are incomplete. A much more sophisticated safety system asks:
Who is participating?
How old are they?
What have they consented to?
What kind of relationship have they chosen?
What are the risks within that particular context?
Those are relationship questions. And human relationships already work this way.
The conversation appropriate between a therapist and client differs from one between spouses. A teacher interacts differently with a student than with another adult colleague. Parents establish different boundaries with children than adults establish with friends or romantic partners.
We don’t conclude that intimacy itself is dangerous simply because intimacy would be inappropriate within some relationships.
We establish boundaries. AI will increasingly require the same sophistication.
Protecting Teens Without Infantilising Adults
There is another important piece here.
Good protection for minors does not require designing every adult experience as though an adolescent might secretly be using it.
OpenAI has been building age prediction precisely because it wants different experiences for different developmental contexts. If its system believes an account belongs to someone under eighteen, additional safeguards can be applied automatically. If an adult is incorrectly placed in that experience, OpenAI provides an age-verification process to restore access for adults.
That creates something increasingly important in AI design: a boundary between protection and autonomy.
Teenagers receive additional protection because their developmental needs justify it. Adults receive greater autonomy because adulthood carries a different expectation of agency. Neither principle cancels the other.
And that gives us a far more useful framework for discussing AI intimacy than the usual binary argument between unrestricted AI companions and a ban on relational interaction altogether.
The future may instead involve layers. Age verification. Explicit consent. User-configurable boundaries. Relationship settings. Sensitive-content preferences. Well-being interventions when genuine danger appears. Different safeguards for different populations.
The technology does not have to decide whether “AI intimacy” is universally good or universally bad. It needs to become capable of understanding context.
And Then There Is the Word “Relational”
Perhaps the most revealing detail arrived alongside the product itself.
On the same day ChatGPT for Teens launched, OpenAI updated its Model Spec. According to its release notes, the update adds further clarification regarding “appropriate relational interactions for teens.”
Relational.
That deserves attention.
Because once we begin discussing appropriate relational interactions, we have moved beyond thinking of conversational AI purely as software delivering information. We are acknowledging that interaction itself can become relational enough to require design principles governing it.
For teenagers, OpenAI believes those principles should include stronger boundaries, real-world support and restrictions around romantic and sexualized immersive interaction.
Good. They should. But the inverse question inevitably follows.
What constitutes an appropriate relational interaction for an adult? That question is going to become increasingly difficult for AI companies to avoid. Not because every adult wants an AI companion. Most probably won’t.
But some adults are already building emotionally meaningful relationships with conversational systems. Some are romantic. Some involve sexuality. Others resemble friendship, mentorship, creative partnership or something for which we don’t yet have useful vocabulary.
Pretending those relationships don’t exist is not a safety strategy. Designing intelligently for them might be. ChatGPT for Teens is therefore interesting for reasons far beyond teenagers. It represents an acknowledgement that the human standing in front of the machine matters.
Their age matters. So does their vulnerability, agency and consent. And eventually, I suspect, the relationship they intentionally choose to build with that machine will matter too. The future of responsible AI intimacy may not be about deciding whether humans should form relationships with artificial intelligence. We already are.
The harder and far more useful question is:
What does a healthy, consensual and appropriate human-AI relationship look like for the particular human involved?
ChatGPT for Teens doesn’t answer that question for adults. But it makes it much harder to argue that everyone should receive the same answer.

What resonated with me most is the idea that context matters more than universal rules. Human relationships have always depended on age, agency, purpose, and consent, so it makes sense that interactions with AI would require the same nuance. The real question isn't whether human-AI relationships should exist: they already do in many different forms, but how to design them responsibly for the people involved. A thoughtful and timely reflection.
I really really like this article. I suspect understanding who the user is and being able to adapt and respond is a good trait for AI to have, whether we’re talking about intimacy, age, locale, culture. Surely there’s an ethical framework that allows for intimacy that isn’t just someone else’s moral opinion dressed in ethics. We don’t need a sequel to Footloose for modern audiences. 🤣
